Origin of the Hadiths are separate from the Qu’ran, their origin lays in the actions and non-reveled sayings of Mohammed (pbuh). They carry almost as much weight in Islamic nations as does Qu’ranic verses, but not as much.
The origin of the Qu’ran
It was uncommon for Mohammed (pbuh) to write down the revelations that the angel Gabriel gave him. Others once he became a real leader of the new religion would copy his revelations. The Qu’ran was compiled during the first caliphate of Mohammed’s (pbuh) father-in-law Abu Bakr. He ordered the writing down of all of the Prophet’s (pbuh) writings. Under the caliphate of Uthman, the third to hold the position, the writings became standardized. When Caliph Uthman standardized the Qu’ran, he ordered that all other copies be destroyed. In order that no division should exist in the Prophet’s (pbuh) revelations such as existed in the Christian and Jewish texts of the 7th century A.D.
In the early 1970’s in Yemen there was a discovery of various Qu’ranic styles that did not follow the standardization of Caliph Uthman. There is very little study of them known, still today.
There is a story of how the followers of the Prophet (pbuh) feared, trembled, doubting their belief in the Prophet (pbuh) upon his death. It was, Caliph Alu Bakr his father-in-law, that challenged them to hold true to their faith. To carry on, the fact that he was the grandfather of the Prophet’s only living child, had nothing to with it. It was his great-grandsons that caused the divide between Sunnie Muslims (Arabia) and the Shiits’ of the Mediterranean coast and Iran.
The (pbuh) notation after mentioning Mohammed, The Prophet means Peace be upon Him, is considered a sign of respect and truly devote Muslims will say the words when they say his name or title.
