Characterizations of other members in the negative are not appropriate.  Do not disparage other members.

Disparaging is to speak of or treat slightingly; depreciate; belittle.

It's quite alright to say (in a post or comment to a post)
"The above is inaccurate [or illogical or incorrect, etc.]  because...", or
"I disagree because...", or

It's not acceptable to say
"that is rubbish", or
"so and so does not know what he's talking about", or
"I guess so and so did not care about checking the accuracy of his answer", or
"again, so and so, you've posted in error", or
"so and so's answer is baloney"
...or similar.

If you can't say something nice to or about another member, then don't say it at all.

We are well aware that some posts are - or seem - ridiculous.  If you feel a post is such, be academic rather than personal in your response :)

I resisted before, but will say more now - after second thought.

Look at this large Archaeology discussion Group.  It is so full of members dogging each other it's not even worth looking into for good discussion.

That is one example (of many) of what we don't want to become :)

Appropriateness is determined by the Forum Rules, not by the popularity of the opinion or conclusion.

Every member here will probably eventually 1) read posts that s/he finds ridiculous, ludicrous, and 2) view particular members rediculous, preposterous, etc. and 2) come to view another member as such...but that in and of itself does not indicate "inappropriateness".

All views, opinions and conclusions are welcome here as long as the language remains civil: conforming to the forum rules.

Chesterton is worth quoting here:

Never allow a quarrel to interrupt a good argument.  ;)

I was really a bit scared about the sometimes so  fierce  mode of correspondence. And declined of posting some ideys .

The French say :
Cest La Tone Qui Fait La Musique.

i love to debate in an friendly atmosphere even if you disagree strongly.
I,m a moderator in some  Fora  and in 1  i have a topic Against The Mainstream  and  when discussion gets to hot and unfriendly we place it in Against the Mainstream is this an idey ????

Civilite Courtoisy or many other names for it .
And Thanks for the  contacting  Bas about subscription i got  response so i can joyn.
because of the many postings  sometimes i think in English :):):)
wish my spelling would be better.

Worthy of note; the notification of new responses can be turned off by clicking the appropriate link in the email: "Unsubscribe to this topic"

I've done that myself on a couple of the threads that in my personal opinion have become ridiculous  ;)

Rick: I find that the contract agreed to when I first became a member is meaningless. Can you tell me how to unsubscribe? Thanks

unsubscribe link

you get emails when replies come in to a thread you check as notify you to see further replies. In that email it says unsubscribe.
This does not mean unsubscribe as a member, it means unsubscribe to the thread.... and that means you are thru talking of that one topic or subject and you dont want emails from that one thread or one topic.
I always check them all out. Its as if your a family at my table and i do read what you guys have to say. But i also wish general chat to be filtered out by deleting so i do notify the moderator but not to come down on anyone who posted, merely to let the moderator know there is wasted posts as mere chit chat. Even this post i dont mind if a moderator edicts because i do know i am wordy. My wordiness is from fear of not being understood.
My brother says i say everything five different ways and he thinks my doing that makes people feel stupid like they need explaining to.

What do you find meaningless about it?

As for unsubscribing, you may unsubscribe from subscribed threads and boards in your profile if you wish.

Is heckling considered appropriate?

When a responder repeatedly posts to several categories on this forum that he/she wants citations to facts commonly known to people interested in Biblical archaeology?  What is this if not heckling or bullying?

Judgment calls are tough. We try to make as few as possible so as to not be viewed as too heavy handed on moderation.

Rarely will 100% of members agree as to what is edited/removed and what is not...so please bear with us :)

i agree. From what i can gather.
When i read something that makes sense to me, and my feelings are perhaps  in agreement, or not in agreement. Perhaps its an absurd
concept but i have heard it before (like Abraham being in charge of the saucer men), i really dislike it if i read a follow up post saying
wheres your sources, wheres your sources, dont post if you dont have your sources, i wanna know where you get this stuff etc etc etc.
I now dislike that person very much, even though i havent seen
it in a while from them. But my point is, we sort of pave our path dont we... i been there, i expect others who hold a mirror to my face, to take a look at themselves too. (And allow me to puke too if they then remark how handsome/beautiful they are).

The Biblical Archaeology Society was founded in 1974 as a nonprofit,
nondenominational, charitable organization dedicated to education and to
dissemination of information about archaeology in the Bible lands.

The Society publishes Biblical Archaeology Review, the largest paid
circulation archaeology magazine in the world. A sister publication, Bible
Review, was launched in 1985 to offer critical and historical
interpretations of biblical texts. Archaeology Odyssey is their newest
publication. With a wider focus than BAR, it covers archaeology and
history from Spain to Persia, exploring the sources of Western
Civilization. To stay well informed of current thinking and events in
Biblical archaeology, it is essential that you have a subscription to the
Biblical Archaeology Review magazine

Here above is the mission statement of BAS from wich we are a spinn off as they call it.and bound to comply if we stick to our name  as Forum.

some amendments  to our costitution :)

1.Let it indeed be for all denominations and dont dont call people Atheist or Heretic if they have other or no Bible interpretations.Like besmearing or demonizing Mormons etc !Dont say that only the Fundamentalistic way is the only way.

Funny thought  Mitt Romney the upcoming Vice President  perhaps ?wouldt be pleased with that :) about Mormons  respect other religions.

2 .Dont write that only your vision/interpretation of religion or science is the only true one respect minimalists middleists :) and maximalists
.Respect non Creationists.Respect that there is more than 1 vision /interpretation.
And dont led your thoughts be guided by personal anthypathy
like  i dont like Prof Finkelstein or Prof.Cline even if you dont agree whit their ideys.

The Jacobovici / Shanks  discussion about the Exodus was as we should discuss Polite and Respectfull in disagreement.

3.Dont write leave this topic, get out, you disturb my topic you dont belong here you are ill , etc etc.
Noboddy except Rick  :) is the absolute monarch of this Forum .lol . lol .

4.Respect the arguments of others an dont disqualify all argument wich dont fit in your opinion.Dont use Ockhams rasor in that way !
And dont play the Torquemada etc role  the Inquisitor !

In good science you find always in the footnotes : but see for a different interpretation   ....... and ..... .

5.Allow some fun jokes humor in the posts    as St.John said :
the bow cant be always tight.

6.tell something more about yourse;lf your cats :) interests etc .
Make it a Forum of Friends not of Foes !!!!!

And remember we are all Human so imperfect with faults and errors Saints/and Sinners( the title of 1 of my moderated topics
 in another Forum)

nice weekend turanclancath:)  /robert .
