Does anyone know if this question has ever been considered, or if there is any published material on the subject?

I'm no expert, but from a bit of surfing, it seems that the overwhelming majority agree that the Romans, at the time of the siege, built it.

some of the references:
Masada: Desert Fortress Overlooking the Dead Sea

Siegecraft.

Roman Siegecraft

Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological ... - Google Book Search

So how do I post the picture of Masada from the above reference?

Here is an interesting timeline question?
Jerusalem was surrounded in Tishri Oct of 66 AD
then a return on Passover of Nisan March 70 AD
which is 3.5 years
many wanted to apply Daniel's 7 year week to this.
So was Masada destroyed Nisan 73 AD or Nisan 74 AD.
The 7 year theory creates 66-73 AD but you will see that it is either 6.5 years to Nisan 73 AD or 7.5 years to 74 AD and the question of perhaps they mean 7th year not 7 years.
Seige was not 6 months but only 2-3 months.
So whats the answer to the puzzle, and are we deciding to favor a wrong answer based in a 7-year faith of prophecy being claimed fulfilled?
