falasha:

Use the "Preview" mode when you reply - that'll let you see what worked.

Also, the beginning of a quote block looks like {quote}, with square instead of curly brackets.   Leave off the slash....  The END of the block looks like {/quote}....

(I've used the curly brackets 'cause the square ones will trigger the "system" to actually do a quote, which we don't want for educational purposes :D....)

Glad to help out!

Stu.

Interesting subject.

perhaps good to look here in Other and then the  topic Bible in Fiction.

I signalize there the problem of how to visualise Biblical topics  Fiction and Non Fiction.

Always a little bit between Scylla and Charybdiss I think.

To practice my quote ability i will try  to quote a part of that post by good old fashioned Copy/Paste.

BIBLE IN FICTION (movies, novels images, paintings etc )

I think very interesting how Bible content  was through the ages  seen in the diverse media  for instance Paintings,Images Novels, and Movies.
Its about fiction not about science .

I always loved Biblical inspired movies like the 10 Commendments, Ben Hur,
Quo Vadis,The Robe etc etc etc.

From Benhur and the 10 Commendments  and Quo Vadis you have diverse remakes  .
Interesting to compare them and with the novels
its fiction so of course there are errors( religious and scientific ) they dont pretend to be scientificor religious to be without errors.
turanclancath.
By the way my favourite scene from Ben Hur is the Naval Battle ( as i love the sea) and not the Chariot race ( most people and film critiques like that one most )

List of compositions by George Frideric Handel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

here you have a list with oratoria by G.F .Haendel
Jephta was a Oratorium of course and not an Opera as i mentioned in the Simcha Jacobovici tread .
Modify time was helas already over  so i correct it here.
Imagine what a wonderful teaching  work you can do about the Holy Bible
if you  illustrate the text with for ionstance music from Haendels Biblical Oratoria Paintings   movies etc etc.
Samson and Delilah would be an wonderful topic seen the enormous amount of litterature ands images movies etc about it.
And wasnt it this months BAR topic ?

What is very instructive for students and so i did it :
The Bible text : Judges 16.line 19/20 states that  Delilah called some other person to  shave his hair.

Well and in most artworks, movies  and  even sermons!!! you will find that
Delilah cuts  Simsons hair herself ( o  wonderful mistake sometimes even with scissors  my historians hearth laughs at this kind of bloopers ).

Nice  example of later antifeminism my students and i concluded, not in concord with the Bible text!

I appreciate your faith but I don't see this as a waste of time. As soon as a fact is known that disputes this being the tomb of Jesus, then disregard it. But until they come up with one piece of evidence that this was not the tomb of Jesus I think it is a legitimate endeavor

this tomb was dismissed 20years ago by the archaeologists and with good reason and it was dismissed again by Craig Evans who wrote a great article in BAR online a little while ago.

I thought the original archaeologist's wife said recently he thought it WAS the tomb of Jesus but was concerned about anti-semitism? I will search for the online article by Craig Evans. Thanks for the heads-up.

she did but that doesn't make the tomb Jesus'.  the orginal archaeologist is still alive though, the one who headed theproject, the one that died was not in charge.

I've not seen that....  But I won't argue the point.  I do see that he's very seriously "into" the field.   I don't think he's into it for the money or self-importance.  If he's biased, it may be because "native" views have been ignored by outside archaeologists (and others) for a long time.

it seems that after the conference jacobovici released a statement that he and his program were vindicted

though many people disagree with that assumption.  (same link)

Mr. Jacobovici is not an archaeologist.  I don't care if he DOES have a masters, it is not in archaeology or a related field.  But then again, this whole field is rather full of bluster and invective.  BAR, interesting publication that it is, doesn't help sometimes.  Those of you that have never read a real archaeological journal would be surprised to find them very dry.  Mr. Jacobovici and Mr. Shanks make things rather tabloid at times.

Again, I love reading BAR, but I have to do a doubletake at some of the editorializing every now and then. Same with Simcha.  Stick with the facts and don't guide the viewer where you want them to go.  Let the data speak.

Hear Hear Hear, Bravissimo !!!!!!

Let the facts and professional dicipline speak, Medical Doctors  about Medical things, Archeologists about Archeology, Historians about History ,  Theologians about Theology,Engineers about Technics , Astronomers about Astronomy , Egyptologists about Egyptology, Assyriologists about Assyriology , Esoterics  about Esoteria  etc etc etc

As an academic Historian( with full Humilitas  and a bit of Superbia ) i,m  of course qualified to speak a bit about Archaeology , Bible ,Assyriology,Egyptology ,Mythology .:):):)

Of course this doesnt imply non professionals cant write here and  never can have good points of vieuw !!!!!!

Its a pity that Prof Collins,Dr Graves Dr  Mc Allister,  Dr Eliya  Hanavi  and other professional Biblical archeologists left this Forum.
They were really a jewel .And really missed here by me.

Professional writing ca n be nice and not to dry.

The late great French Mediaevist Georges Duby is an good example readable exellent style not dry and very academic

Yes, you're correct! And let me through it out there to make sure I don't anger anyone....people NOT formally educated in archaeology et al  CAN make a significant contribution.  Matter of fact, one of the pioneers in my area of study was a pediatrician.  It's Simcha's (and some other folks') belief that they can/should speak authoritatively on everything that bothers me.

Is it just me who waffles on whether to call him a good investigator or just a good producer?

Sometimes I watch Naked Archaeologist thinking how awesome he is - and an episode or two later I get angry at what seems to be just hype.

As for his Exodus special, I found much of it just baloney.

Is he respected in the Scholarly community?

He is most certainly not respected in the scholarly community. His career has been in television. Nothing special or noteworthy about his biblical-themed programs.

He's a snake-oil salesman.

Hello, Turan! While I certainly appreciate the compliment and being "lumped in" with those other great people that you mentioned, I must correct you. I do not hold a doctorate and I am not a professional archaeologist. I have had very little in the way of training in that field. But, once again, thanks!

No, I just try to apply whatever critical thinking skills that I may claim to have to the issue at hand. I analyze, research and often start all over...haha. I will use Dr. Collins as an example...

Long ago, I held the view that the cities of the plain might very well be in the Northern area of the Dead Sea. However, I am neither a professional nor in a position to even visit the area any time soon (but hopefully next year!). I kept my personal views on this pretty much to myself, certain family members (like my wife) and a few close friends. Instead, I was content to rest in the hope that others in the field would eventually come out with the research or evidence to at least lend credence to the idea--therefore, I would never claim to have even remotely been the first to think of such a thing. To wit, others long before this generation had the same ideas, etc.

So, I try to keep up with the progress of Dr. Collins, Graves and their teams. I don't ask many questions because I do understand the reports. For the questions I do have, Dr. Collins, et al, have answered them graciously and fully even if it was one of those "hit-yourself-in-the-head-afterward" questions...haha.

There you have it friend! I am no more professional than you or others on this board. Therefore, I will never disrespect them by using a title that I do not have or have never gained. Cheers, buddy!
