i have read a couple of his works, thoroughly enjoyed them, don't agree with everything he has said but he has made great contributions to biblical archaeology.

what is everyone's take on him?

I,too, have read some of his work and agree with the other poster that I agree with some of what he says and do not agree with some of what he says. He has made some great contributions to the science.

I've read some of his work on-line and enjoyed it very much. I think he is an excellent person to oppose the Danes and their views. The Documentary Hypothesis cannot be proven true and Kitchen reminds them of that.

i agree with you but it is surprising that even dever accpepts this hypothesis without question and without evidence such sources actually existed.

to me those who accept JEPD are reading into scriptures what they want to see there and not looking at what really took place.  for example, many archaeologists assume that because the books of kings and chronicles mention other annals that those books mentined were sources for the Biblical authors.  there is no proof of that and all such reference could mean that the authors are saying is 'if you want more detail go to those books',

i do not see those books that are mentioned as being sources and the book of kings or chronicles as edited versions.

Aren't Thompson(sp?), Lemke and such scholars and not archaeologists? It's my understanding they only interpret the works of those who do the digging.

probably so  lowrider.  davies, another minimalist, is a scholar who studies the Bible and looks at the physical evidence obtained.  i am sure lemke and others do the same thing.

thanks for posting that link.  i had forgotten to look it up after i bought a new computer.

Love him! He's been a great help (as much as time and University schedules will allow him to be) to me in my own personal research. Anytime I've asked him a question, he's answered it, swiftly, and without a hint of derision.

I think he's working on Documentation for Ancient Arabia (Volume 3) right now. He's trying to create a new, unified model for inscriptions from all the major and minor Arabian tribes.

Academically, Kitchen is an Egyptologist, but teaches without a degree.
