i have just finished reading his book 'david & solomon' and find it to be one filled with unfounded conjecture, therory and no facts.  it seems that when both finkelstein and silberman do not like a passage of the Bible, they simply re-date or re-write it at will and to make scriptures fit their agenda.

i find this guy and his writing partner to be a great travesty on archaeology as, when they cannot find contemporary evidence (circa 10th c. b.c.) to support their thinking, they tgo 80 to 300 years into the 'future' and use material for those generations to support their denial of the Biblical record.

They, too, believe and promote a late authorship yet like all the rest cannotproduce one iota of evidence to support such a claim nor can they demonstrate the validity of any copying and editing  being done.

they also show a complete ignorance of construction methods as they make bold claims that the buildings left behind prove the two kings did not reignas the Bibnle says.

their middle of the road stance causes them to present confusing ideas which contradict each other and to make it work they must omit certain facts and pieces of evidence which goes contrary to their thinking.

i also notice that they only investigate far enough to decide that they have 'proof' for their agenda but are afraid to dig deeper for they might find something that undermines their objective.  that objective and agenda is found at the following website:

http://sol.sci.uop.edu/~jfalward/Archaeology_and_the_Bible.htm

in reading this work, i have found that it doesn't even contain enough good kernals to be of any value to anyone except those who wish to find an excuse to dismiss the biblical record.

i am surprised no one has taken up this subject.  i have been dealing with a militant atheist for years who swears by this guy and no matter how much i (with God's help) prove finkelstein is wrong, he hangs on tighter than a drowning swimmer to a life guard.

finkelstein ignores a lot when he makes statements that fit his agenda and he attributes much to the omrides even though they did not do what he has claimed.

this guy is one of the great deceivers in the archaeological world and someone needs to knock him down a few pegs.

Recently, on The Naked Archaeologist Finkelstein said David's kingdom was not very large but it did lay the foundation for Solomon's much larger kingdom. I can only guess what context he meant that to be taken. I do not care much for his ideas or work. Tell your atheist friend this little ditty if he hasn't already heard it before

" God doesn't believe in atheist. They don't exist."

Good luck dealing with him. Many people cannot accept the existence of God because they do not want to be held accountable to Him. The old "I am the captain of my ship" belief.

i hve that series but you have to keep in mind that finkelsteinexpects to find physical evidence for every little event or he will dismiss it as untrue.  problemis, when he is presented evidence he finds some way to dismiss it as he did to eliat mazar & her discoveries in his tel aviv report.

having read one of his books and one of his partners books plus articles by them i find that the can be dismissed because they are not looking for any truth but want to remove the biblical accounts from jewish history.

even dever wants him to provide proof for his theories and he can't do it.  in his book, david and solomon all he could do is say--'we suggest' or 'we argue'  and then skip 80 to 300 years to try and disprove the biblical claims.  i find his and his writing partners works are not honest.

Dever allowed pottery and diggings to overcome the faith his own father preached. He let them over rule the faith he heard from childhood. Seems he and Davis have a distinct dislike for each other.
